When choosing a bathroom vanity or laundry cabinet, the material it is made from matters just as much as how it looks. Bathrooms and laundries are high-moisture environments where humidity, splashes and steam are part of daily life, and the material your cabinet is built from determines how well it handles those conditions over time.
The four most common materials used in bathroom and laundry cabinetry in Australia are plywood, MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard), PVC and particle board. Each has genuine strengths, and the right choice depends on your bathroom's conditions, your budget and how long you want the cabinet to last.

The Four Materials
How Each Material Performs in Wet Areas
Plywood
Built from multiple layers of wood veneer glued with alternating grain direction, plywood is the strongest engineered wood used in cabinetry. Its cross-layered construction gives it natural resistance to warping, and marine-grade or moisture-resistant plywood handles humid bathroom conditions particularly well. It holds screws securely, supports heavier stone or ceramic benchtops without sagging, and can be finished with laminate, veneer or paint. Plywood is typically the most expensive of the four, but its longevity often makes it the most cost-effective over the life of a renovation.
MDF
MDF is made from fine wood fibres compressed with resin under high pressure, producing a dense, smooth panel that takes paint exceptionally well. It is commonly used for cabinet doors and drawer fronts where a flawless painted finish is the goal. Standard MDF will swell if exposed to moisture, but moisture-resistant MDF (often identified by its green core) is designed for bathroom use and handles humidity better. All edges must be properly sealed. MDF is more affordable than plywood and works well in well-ventilated bathrooms and powder rooms.
PVC
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) cabinets are completely waterproof, making them the most moisture-resistant option available. They will not swell, warp or deteriorate from humidity or direct water contact, which makes them a practical choice for high-moisture environments or bathrooms without strong ventilation. PVC cabinets are lightweight, easy to clean and require minimal maintenance. The trade-off is a more limited range of finishes compared to timber-based materials, though modern PVC cabinetry has improved significantly in appearance.
Particle Board
Particle board is made from wood chips, sawdust and resin pressed together under heat. It is the most affordable option and is commonly found in entry-level cabinetry. When coated with melamine or laminate, it provides a clean look and adequate durability for dry areas. However, standard particle board is the most vulnerable to moisture damage. Once the protective coating is breached, the core absorbs water and can swell or break down quickly. Moisture-resistant particle board (HMR) performs better, but proper edge sealing is essential in any bathroom application.

Which Material Is Right for Your Bathroom?
There is no single best material for every bathroom. The right choice depends on three things: how much moisture the room generates, what kind of benchtop or basin the cabinet needs to support, and your renovation budget.
A master bathroom with a large shower and limited ventilation puts cabinets under constant humidity pressure. In that environment, plywood or PVC will outperform MDF and particle board over time. A well-ventilated powder room with only a basin sees far less moisture, and a quality MDF vanity with a properly sealed finish can serve well for years at a lower price point.
If you are installing a heavy stone benchtop, the cabinet's structural strength matters more. Plywood is the strongest option for supporting weight without sagging over time. For lighter ceramic or solid-surface tops, MDF or PVC can handle the load comfortably.
Many quality vanities combine materials, using plywood or moisture-resistant particle board for the cabinet body and MDF for doors where a smooth painted finish is needed. This mixed approach balances performance and cost effectively.

Regardless of the material you choose, proper ventilation makes the biggest difference to cabinet longevity in a bathroom. An exhaust fan that runs during and for 15 to 20 minutes after every shower significantly reduces the moisture load on all cabinetry materials.
